Gov. Laura Kelly vetoed dozens of bills, but Republicans overrode a majority to force the measures into law — including restrictions on student protesters, funding for anti-abortion centers, and more power for landlords.

Voters are heading to the polls to cast ballots in a variety of local races and issues, including city council and board of education contests, as well as several key bond proposals.

While the U.S. Senate remains deadlocked over President Donald Trump’s call for strict citizenship voting requirements, Republicans in some states are pressing ahead with their own measures that could require documentary proof of citizenship to join or remain on the voter rolls.

Iowans have elected the first Black woman to the state Senate. Republicans were hoping to regain a supermajority in the Senate after the death of a veteran lawmaker.
