Andrea Lopreato's record-setting day guided Northwest Missouri State to a 75-64 non-conference win over Sioux Falls in the Central Region Showcase.
The Bearcat junior put up a program-record 40 points to lift the Green and White to its first win of the season.
The Cougars, playing their first game of the season, opened the game on a roll, jumping out to a 14-4 lead in the first quarter.
The Bearcats (1-2) responded with a 16-0 run sparked by Lopreato. The Mount Pleasant, IA native scored nine straight to cut the deficit to one. Then, with the first quarter coming to a close, she found a wide open Kirsten Hauck for a corner three to give Northwest a 16-14 advantage. The second frame started the way the first ended, with Lopreato hitting a layup and two free throws to cap the run and anchor the Bearcats to a six-point lead.
Sioux Falls climbed within two points of Northwest multiple times in the third quarter, but were never able to overtake the Bearcats.
Lopreato finished the day with 40 points on 10-19 shooting from the field and 19-21 at the free throw line. She also chipped in with eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.
The previous high-scoring mark at Northwest was 39 points held by Kelly Leintz in a game against Truman State on February 17, 1988.
