Lanham Music's Rock Camp gave young musicians the opportunity to form bands, learn to collaborate and perform live after a week of rehearsals.
The camp ran June 15-20, challenging students to prepare songs across multiple genres for a public performance on the final day. Participants worked together in bands throughout the week, developing both musical and teamwork skills.
Lanham Music teacher Beaux Lux said the camp helps students build confidence by performing with others.
"Usually what happens is the less experienced people wind up being able to outperform where they expected they would've been able to do just by virtue of doing the thing. Many of them have not ever been in the scenario before where they are working with other people and so they don't have a way to anticipate what immense growth you can get out of just not doubting yourself and being in a position where you run with everybody."
The final performances were held at Cafe Acoustic and featured two concerts. Lunch Detention and Barbed Wire performed during the 2:15 p.m. show, while The Quills and Skull Orchard took the stage at 5:15 p.m.
The event also included a raffle for five free guitars for participants younger than 18, encouraging aspiring musicians to continue developing their skills.
Lux said creating opportunities for young performers is one of his goals because there are few venues available for musicians under 21.
"It is a personal goal (of mine) to try to deal with the fact that there is a shortage of opportunities for people under 21 to do music in society and that's sad. And so to have an outlet of just proof of process like they used to in previous generations where you can just go and play. That is critical. That is something that needs to be addressed by every aspect everywhere across this country."
