Northwest Missouri State baseball and softball knocked off the rust their first competitions of the spring season, while basketball and indoor track & field hit the final month before the postseason.
Bearcat men's basketball suffered a setback in its lone meeting last week — an 84-65 loss to Missouri Western. Northwest will get two more chances at home before going on the road again. Head coach Matt Keeley and redshirt freshman Presley Ibeh sat down with John Coffey to discuss this week's matchups with Central Oklahoma and Rogers State.
The spring tennis season begins this week with a tour through Arkansas City, KS for non-conference matches Friday. Northwest head coach Mark Rosewell enters his 44th year as a head coach, 41 as a Bearcat, just 11 wins shy of 1,300 for his career. Rosewell, senior Gage Foltz, and sophomore Chiharu Ito joined the program to discuss the upcoming season.
Northwest's outstanding indoor track & field season continued last weekend at the Washburn Open. Frank Sparks and Moses Koroma put up NCAA provisional qualifying times in the 60m hurdles, with Sparks time of 7.94 clocking in as the second fastest in program history. Assistant coach Cody Ingold, Sparks and Koroma visited with us about the outstanding performance and this weekend's Bearcat Invite at the Hughes Fieldhouse.
Northwest women's basketball snapped a four-game skid and completed a regular season sweep of Missouri Western on Saturday. The Bearcats look to roll that success into its first meetings with Central Oklahoma and Rogers State. Sophomore guard Kirsten Hauck and redshirt freshman forward Maggie Collins spoke with Coffey on the success the team found at home.
The softball season got underway in Texas last weekend. The Bearcats started fast with a pair of walk-off wins, but dropped their final three games. Senior outfielders Omara Love and Alexis Brown got off to outstanding starts at the plate. Brown is batting .400, while Love is second in the MIAA with eight RBIs. Head coach Naomi Tellez, Brown and Love joined the show ahead of this weekend's games in Bentonville, AR.
