The spring sports season gets underway this week as Northwest softball and baseball take to the road. On the winter sports side, basketball returns home and indoor track & field travels to Topeka, KS.
The Bearcat track & field team tacked on eight NCAA provisional qualifying marks in Pittsburg, KS last weekend, including a school record in the 3,000 meter run by Kiki Witt and a personal-best shotput by sophomore Demarii Williams. Williams, along with assistant coaches Cody Ingold and Tanner Berg joined us on this week's show ahead of the Washburn Open schedule for Friday and Saturday.
Northwest baseball begins the season Friday in Weatherford, OK looking to build off of a 2025 campaign that saw the Bearcats make a charge to the MIAA Tournament championship. Head coach Tony Jandron enters his second season leading the program. He and transfer outfielder Frank Gall sat down with John Coffey to discuss this weekend's games against Southwestern Oklahoma State.
Bearcat softball will head to Manfield, TX with five games on the opening weekend schedule. Northwest head coach Naomi Tellez begins her fifth season at the helm. Her squad will be led by seven seniors, including outfielder Alexis Brown. Tellez, Brown and sophomore catcher Kaylee Cords were on the show highlighting the upcoming season of Northwest softball.
Royce Williams delivered a much-needed win for Northwest men's basketball Friday in Warrensburg. Williams nailed a jump shot with two seconds remaining to lift the Bearcats past the Central Missouri Mules 80-79. This week is a rematch with Missouri Western in Maryville. Williams and head coach Matt Keeley spoke about the win and the boost it could provide in the weeks to come.
Northwest women's basketball has an opportunity to complete the regular season sweep of Missouri Western on Saturday afternoon. The Bearcats won the first meeting in St. Joseph 62-48, but have lost four in a row entering the weekend. Freshmen Bailey Birmingham and Boston Wand discussed the week leading up to the matchup, and the chance to play Missouri Western again at home.
