Northwest Missouri State basketball continues its homestand this week with rematches against Nebraska Kearney and Fort Hays, while indoor track & field returns for its first meet since mid December.
Bearcat deputy athletic director Tim Yourison was the first guest on the show discussing the upcoming winter and spring sports seasons, opportunities ahead at Northwest Missouri State, and his first full year with the university.
The indoor track & field season begins to find a rhythm in January after the Bearcats ran in a couple December meets, then entered the holiday break. It begins this Saturday at Hughes Fieldhouse with the Coach Richard Alsup Open. It is an opportunity for Kendall Tietjen to settle in as a Bearcat after transferring to Northwest from Black Hills State. Saturday will also be the first opportunity for Danny Jantzen to get on the track after taking a medical redshirt and missing all of last year. Tietjen, Jantzen and head coach Brandon Masters joined us on this week's show.
Bearcat men's basketball hung tough with Central Missouri and No. 1 Washburn last week, but weren't able to pull out a win from either battle. This week, Northwest will get rematches with Nebraska Kearney and Fort Hays. The first time around, the 'Cats won a barn burner against the Lopers, but fell on the road against the Tigers. Northwest head coach Matt Keeley sat down with John Coffey to discuss the upcoming matchups.
For a second time this season, Northwest women's basketball needed overtime to decide a conference game, and, once again, the Bearcats came out on top. The 65-61 triumph over Washburn in double overtime stopped a three-game skid. This week is another tall task with UNK and No. 6 Fort Hays visiting Maryville. True freshmen Bailey Birmingham and Boston Wand have been major contributors this season, and a big reason why Northwest is 10-6 on the season. They join the show to discuss their transition from high school to collegiate basketball, and the relationships built within the team.
