Rolling Hills Library prepares to move to its new facility, opening next spring

As it prepares to move to whole new facility early next year, the rolling hills library in St Joseph, Missouri is selling off surplus items at a sale this weekend.

The Library is selling off books, tables, televisions, computer monitors, a piano, and other items which it won’t need at its new facility. The sale occurs Sept. 19-20 at the Library’s North Belt Branch, which will close when the new facility is ready.

Rolling Hills Library Director Michelle Mears says the sale will help smooth the transition to the new facility.

"In anticipation for our move to our new facility in March of 2026, we are starting to sell some of the surplus equipment and supplies that we have,” explained Library Director Michelle Mears. She said they are hoping to schedule a few more sales after this weekend’s event.

She said, they need to free up space, and “move some of those materials out, so we can [organize] the things that we are going to keep"

The new facility is currently under construction on South Riverside Road near Mosaic Life Care.

Library staff say the new space will be an upgrade from the current location on the Belt.

"Having a library facility that is designed to be a library from the beginning will benefit our patrons in lots of different ways,” Mears said. “There are features we are adding that we could not add to the current building, including a drive through window for pickups, and we will have lots of outdoor space and green space to do events and programs.

One the Belt, she continued, “we are surrounded by asphalt parking lots with no trees at all; so this will be a better atmosphere for our public library."

The project is estimated to cost at around $17 million, and is being funded by bond measures and library reserves.
