John Josendale and Larry Miller will compete to be the next mayor of St. Joseph in the April 7 general election.

The Buchanan County Clerk’s Office released the unofficial results of the mayoral primary contest shortly after polls closed in the city.

Josendale, the current mayor, received 40% of the 4,560 votes cast. He was elected to the position in 2022 and is nearing the end of his first 4-year-term. Miller, a St. Joseph resident famed locally for his friendly demeanor on walks in the city, received 26% of the votes cast, beating out Johnathan McClain by a mere 50 votes to advance to the general election.

Kenneth Reeder received 418 votes, roughly 9% of those cast. The clerk calculated voter turnout at 10.5%

During his campaign, Josendale promised to continue his current priorities, including public safety, transparency, and government efficiency. Miller ran on a collaborative approach to handling city issues and emphasized improved policing and public infrastructure.
