The Stanberry R-2 school district recently held their August meeting and went over multiple topics. Topics of note include the most recent, state-wide ban of cell phones in classrooms. Stanberry Superintendent John Davison says Stanberry already has a cell phone ban in place. He did add the state ban is more expansive than the district's current policy, so it will have to update its personal device rules.
" The biggest impact it had on us was the inclusion of the smart watches, smart watches, personal computers that students might have brought to school in the past. So really it's any personal device that can send communication to somebody else. Those are the ones that are prohibited now.", says Davison.
More information on the cell phone ban for the district can be found on the district site as well as on the district social media pages.
Senate bill 68 was also a discussion topic during this months meeting. The legislation adds new safety precautions and requires a safety specialist, which Superintendent Davison himself is for Stanberry schools. Stanberry is working with other staff members to make more safety specialists for the district.
The Board of education also discussed recent improvements to the bleachers in the gymnasium. The bleachers, built in 1966, are unique to the area and in the interest of preserving history, restored the original wood and re-stained the seats. All work was done by an outside company. Other services over the summer included redoing floors, installing new cabinets in classrooms where requested, and putting new indoor batting cages in the softball and baseball practice areas.
