Marc Gordon has shifted the culture for Northwest Missouri State soccer through his first eight seasons leading the program. The Bearcats have finished with a record above .500 each of the last five years including a pair of region tournament berths 2021 and 2022, but now they're looking to climb to the next level.
The first step is being taken this week.
Northwest is creating a competitive atmosphere in early practices to simulate a game-like feel, and also give the student-athletes the opportunity to prove themselves.
"I feel like it's something they control as players," Gordon said Thursday morning. "We want to find results. We want to reward those that are fit and ready. The competitiveness, the energy is really high."
As the preseason workouts continue with an eye toward the season-opener August 28 in Aberdeen, South Dakota, nothing on the pitch has been solidified.
"There are no defined roles yet. Yes, you come back and have some seniors that have some all-conference accolades. There are some expectations and things you want out of them, so the competitiveness and everyone's willingness to work right now has been good."
Northwest plays a trio of exhibitions before the season officially begins. The first preseason game will be this Sunday, August 16 at 1:00pm against Truman State in Maryville.
