125 Years Ago: 1901
A local ice plant was reported to be up and running to deliver manufactured ice, which was made from distilled water. The plant was open for tours so people could see how the ice was made because it was different than normal ice. Manufactured ice remained frozen longer than regular ice.
The members of the Manchester Band gave an ice cream supper and band concert at Pinkston Lawn in Skidmore on Saturday evening.
One hundred and fifty acres of wheat was destroyed in a fire thought to be caused by sparks from a passing train. The damage was estimated to be about $2,000.
75 Years Ago: 1951
The Secretary of Agriculture designated Nodaway County a part of Missouri’s disaster area.
Farm families who suffered severe production issues because of the extreme weather in the county were eligible for disaster loans. Disaster loans could be made for feed, seed, and other essential farm and home operating expenses.
There was National Guard activity in Maryville when the Kansas National Guard and Engineer Battalion motor convoys passed through town on their way to Camp Ripley, Minnesota, for their annual two-week training encampment.
The annual livestock tour was sponsored by the Nodaway County Farm Bureau Livestock and Wool Marketing Committee in cooperation with the Agricultural Extension Service. Farms visited were those of Myron Horton, Dean Peterson, Denton McGinnis, Charlie Massie, and Marvin Carmichael and Dave Hockensmith.
50 Years Ago: 1976
An open house was held at the Maryville water plant. The main purpose was for city residents to see the operation and needs. This was to help citizens better understand an upcoming public vote.
Robert L. Reames from Maryville received a certificate honoring his 10 years of federal service. Reames had served as a civil engineering technician with the Soil Conservation Service and had been with the Maryville office since April 1973.
John Ashcroft, the Republican candidate for Attorney General, kicked off his campaign in Nodaway County with a series of visits across Maryville.
