125 Years Ago: 1901

An order was put into effect that all dogs needed to securely wear muzzles in Maryville. The city ordered that all large dogs that did not have muzzles on would be killed. This was happening because over twenty dogs had been bitten due to “mad dogs”.

A four-year-old boy was saved by a police officer. A ‘mad dog’ in Maryville was put down by police while saving a boy’s life. The little boy was out with his puppy when another dog attacked them. A nearby officer shot the dog before it to could do much harm. The report was that this was one of the “mad dogs” causing problems in town.

The Nodaway County Sunday School Association held its annual convention in Graham. The program included Bible readings, normal Bible lessons, and Bible drills.

A Nodaway County soldier arrived home after being enlisted in the United States army in June 1899. Linzie Noblet had spent most his time in the Philippine Islands and then in San Francisco before he received an honorable discharge on May 10th.

A mandolin club performed in Skidmore. It was a popular performance with only two tickets left unsold. The concert brought in about $40.

75 Years Ago: 1951

Reverend M.S. Harvey, pastor of the First Methodist Church in St. Joseph, delivered the baccalaureate sermon to the 100 graduating seniors at Northwest Missouri State College. Ken Reynolds, the junior class president, led the processional march, and the College Tower Choir sang “Lift Up My Eyes” and “Choral Amen.”

In other graduation news, Maryville High School celebrated 69 senior graduates. Two seniors tied for valedictorian and two for salutatorian honors. Twenty-five dollars was given to each boy and girl of the senior class who scored the highest in scholastics, school activities, and leadership service to the high school.

Robert Sawyers purchased The Palms on Buchanan Street in Maryville and planned to hold a grand re-opening in the coming weeks.

Maryville attorney Russell S. Noblet was recalled to active duty as assistant legal advisor in Washington.

The Lyre Club had their annual picnic on a farm in Maryville. During the picnic, the club presented gold, bronze, and silver medals to senior members who had been a part of the group’s contest participation, given a recital, or both.

A man from the Air Force unit at Northwest Missouri State College was arrested for being drunk in view of the public. He plead guilty and was fined $10.

50 Years Ago: 1976

Five Nodaway County athletes took prizes at the state track meet. Three boys from the county placed in the Class 1-A state meet at William Jewell College. The other two places came at Lebanon in girls state meet.

Miss Georgia Anne Wilmes was the winner of the MFA Foundation Scholarship. Wilmes was a senior at Maryville High School and planned to attend Northwest Missouri State University to pursue a career in education.
