125 Years Ago: 1901

Local teachers spoke out against the new laws to secure a teaching job. The teachers said that educators shouldn’t be required to have new certificates issued by institutes approved by the new laws if they already had acquired state teaching certificates. Nodaway County said they would hire the best instructors for the given positions regardless of what was being said by the teachers.

The Christian Women’s Board of Foreign Missions held a program that raised the group $28. That is the equivalent of over $1,000 today!

75 Years Ago: 1951

A formation of B-29 airplanes flew over Maryville at 1:49 PM to salute veterans for Armed Forces Day on May 10th.

C.T. “Ted” Baldwin was elected as president of the Maryville Chamber of Commerce.

The Red Cross in Maryville conducted classes in Hopkins. The classes focused on first aid and home nursing.

The Maryville Garden Club celebrated its twentieth anniversary. All current and former members were invited to attend the event, which was held at the First Christian Church.

The Maryville Cub Scouts hosted a “Cub Scout Circus” at the Eugene Field School. The event was open to the public and each den of Cub Scouts presented an act.

Bill Duke recently bought the Pontiac Garage in Maryville from Andrew Gentry. For National Car Safety Month in May, Bill offered to check people’s cars for free!

50 Years Ago: 1976

Northwest Missouri State University held its graduation ceremony for 749 seniors.

A Mother-Daughter Banquet was held at the Cardinal Inn for Northwest Missouri State University sorority members from Pi Pi Chapter and Beta Sigma Phi. Each member took their daughter or adopted daughter to the event.

Maryville High School held its Second Annual Awards Night in the high school gym. The program included the presentation of awards, the announcement of scholarship recipients, and the introduction of student council officers.

The Maryville High School golf team took home new wins. The team placed ninth out of 22 teams in the district golf tournament held at Excelsior Springs.

Four high school seniors were sent home early from the school’s senior trip when empty liquor bottles were found in the students’ room.
