Very early in the morning of Saturday, April 28th, an explosion occurred just outside the local Northwest College Women’s Residence Hall. Approximately 30 students were injured, some of them critically with severe burns. The explosion was from a natural gas tank leak, but the exact cause of the leak was unknown at this time. College officials estimated it would cost $400,000 to repair the building. High on the list of losses due to the fire were 13 pianos, the basement dining room, and practice rooms in the music department.

After the explosion, calls swamped the Maryville phone lines. Many frightened parents took to the phone exchange and were notified that students had been given alternative housing arrangements with Maryville residents.

Pranksters sent a few college girls back to the hospital not long after the terrible explosion. Some of the girls living off campus were frightened when firecrackers were shot at the windows where they were staying. The young women experienced waves of shock and were sent to St. Francis Hospital for evaluation.
