Northwest Missouri State celebrated Family Weekend with Bearcat football and volleyball wins, while soccer hung tough in its MIAA opener and cross country competed in its first full team meet.
Bearcat football put on its most dominant effort of a season in a 62-point victory over Missouri Southern. The Northwest defense allowed just eight rush yards and sacked the Lions quarterbacks five times. Head coach John McMenamin and defensive lineman Jacob Stockard joined the program to discuss the victory and this week's challenge at Central Oklahoma.
Northwest soccer suffered a pair of one-goal losses to Northeastern State and Central Oklahoma as they opened MIAA play. This week, the Bearcats visit the Sunflower State with trips to Newman and Washburn. Head coach Marc Gordon and sophomore Maddie Gemeinhardt discussed the mental side of the sport and finding a way to finish matches strong.
Bearcat cross country visited Ankeny, Iowa for the Viking Invitational and the first full-team meet of the season. The Northwest women finished second as a team, while the men took fifth. Head coach Myles Bach and junior Madison Roberts spoke about a strong performance despite muddy conditions in Ankeny.
Northwest volleyball upended No. 22 Central Oklahoma Thursday to open Family Weekend, then followed it up with a victory over Newman to start MIAA competition 2-0. The Bearcats host No. 15 Washburn Tuesday evening. Head coach Amy Woerth and senior Sophia Gartner spoke with Sam Reeves about the turnaround and the opportunity coming this week.
