October 14 Bearcat Coaches Show

Northwest senior Kate Frakes (left) and head volleyball coach Amy Woerth were guests on this week's Bearcat Coaches Show from Pizza Ranch.

For the first time this fall, Northwest Missouri State will have a trio of teams in action in Maryville this weekend.

Northwest football used an overwhelming rushing attack to down Central Missouri on the road last week. Now, the Bearcats shift their focus to a Fort Hays team that is in desperate need of a win to keep any playoff hopes alive entering the final weeks of the season. Head coach John McMenamin and senior Parker Bowen sat down with John Coffey this afternoon during the weekly show.

Bearcat volleyball had two narrow misses on the road last week as their conference record dropped to 0-6. Northwest will have a chance to respond quickly with a brief road trip to St. Joseph against Missouri Western Tuesday night, before getting Newman and Pittsburg State at home on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Head coach Amy Woerth and senior Kate Frakes said the team has used the adversity to build tighter bonds.

The MIAA cross country championships are still a week and a half out, so Northwest is using the time between meets to ramp up training. Bearcat coach Wick Cunningham said the three weeks between races allows for the team to push itself and try to reach another level before the conference meet. Cunningham, junior Whitney Post and senior Austin Goetsche joined the show to discuss the fall season.

No. 24 Bearcat soccer battled No. 9 Central Missouri to a one-point loss last Friday before shutting out Rogers State in Claremore, OK on Sunday. Northwest will be back home this weekend with a chance to keep pace in the win column with Central Missouri, Washburn and Emporia State as a tight MIAA race continues. Northwest assistant Riley Pfannenstiel, and freshmen Rachel Smale and Emma Jeffiers spoke about the success this season, and the opportunities coming up against Fort Hays and Nebraska Kearney.
