Northwest Missouri State soccer continued it's defensive lockdown in MIAA play, while Bearcat cross country ran through its competition, volleyball faced a tough slate of games, and football enjoyed a bye week,
With four straight wins in tow, Northwest football stepped away for a well-timed bye week. The Bearcats will go on the road October 11 to face the high-flying Central Missouri Mules. Head coach John McMenamin and senior quarterback Chris Ruhnke sat down with John Coffey to give an update on the program and preview the matchup.
Northwest volleyball continues its grind through some of the best teams in the MIAA. The Bearcats dropped a pair of matches to the red hot Fort Hays State Tigers and No. 3 Nebraska Kearney Lopers. This week, it's a battle with No. 4 Central Oklahoma. Bearcat head coach Amy Woerth and senior setter Ella Caffery discuss the mid-season push and the continued efforts to focus on each set individually through a rugged MIAA.
An outstanding performance in Arkansas earned a Bearcat runner national recognition. Northwest men's cross country finished third of 30 teams, while the women posted a ninth place finish among 29 teams at the Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, AR. Senior Aziz Mohammed placed sixth to earn USTFCCCA National D2 Runner of the Week accolades. Sophomore Ava Gehlen put down a personal-best in the 5K to help lift the women's squad. Mohammed, Gehlen and coach Wick Cunningham sat down to go over the performances as they now begin to shift their focus to the conference meet.
Northwest soccer is one of two teams with a perfect 3-0 mark in the MIAA. The Bearcats shutout both Central Oklahoma and Newman, and have outscored conference opponents 5-0 through three matches. Sophomore Lillie Shaw found the back of the net for the first time in her career with a goal against the Jets Sunday. She also registered her second assist of the season, tied for most on the team. Shaw and head coach Marc Gordon joined the program to talk about the success and breakdown the upcoming road trip through Central Missouri and Rogers State.
