Trade talks resumed this week between the United States and Mexico.
That was brought up during a hearing of the Senate finance committee by Iowa senator Charles Grassley, who questioned U.S. trade representative Jamieson Greer about the possible negative impact to pork producers.
In comments shared on the YouTube channel SenChuckGrassley, the senator brought up "how the United States and Mexico failed to reach an agreement on Mexican tomato exports. The Mexican government then launched an investigation into unfair trade practices of the U.S. pork industry. "
Grassley then asked Greer, "Ahead of further negotiations with Mexico this week, what is USTR doing to ensure Iowa pig farmers – because we’re number one in the production of pork – so we don’t get caught up in the crossfire of trade retaliation?"
Greer said in part that if Mexico takes action on pork, the consequences will be quite challenging given their dependence on the U.S.
