South Harrison R-II Board advances building projects

South Harrison School District

The South Harrison R-II School District Board of Education met Nov. 10 to review ongoing projects and consider measures aimed at addressing financial pressures and future planning.

Superintendent Mike Estes reported progress on a building project at the district’s trades school, where students are constructing two cabins for a local RV park. “The buildings and trades program are currently building two cabins to one of the…campsite RV parks here in town,” Estes said. He noted the project is part of a broader renovation effort by the property owner and marks “phase two” of the improvement.

Estes also updated the board on the district’s strategic plan, describing it as a five-year guide for district improvement. “It is the district improvement plan, so [it] involves predominantly academics and student growth, but it also involves the facilities, technology—any area that involves continuous growth,” he said.

The board approved a resolution to place a tax levy increase on the April ballot. District leaders say the additional revenue is needed as enrollment declines and state reimbursements fall short.

Board members also accepted gifts from BTC Bank, including support for the softball team’s trip to the state championship and funds for winter gear and clothing.
