Trenton Council reviews projects, sets filing dates for 2026 election

KTTN

The Trenton City Council this week approved several ongoing infrastructure projects and outlined key dates for the city’s upcoming municipal election.

The filing period for candidates seeking seats on the eight-member council will open Dec. 9 and close Dec. 30. The election is set for April 7, 2026. Half of the council’s members are up for election each year.

City Clerk Anita Ewing said the city uses two-year, staggered terms to maintain continuity.
“Then they alternate,” Ewing said. “So we have two councilmen from each of the four wards, and so they’ll alternate. Last year we had one from each ward, and now this year we’ll have the other one from each ward.”

In addition to the regular ward elections, the seat currently held by Councilmember Lindsay Stevens will also appear on the ballot. Stevens was appointed earlier this year and must now stand before voters to serve a full term. Filing requires a $5 fee, a notarized form and basic paperwork.

The council also reviewed its five-year plan for major infrastructure improvements. Priority items will be added to what Ewing described as an “owner-supervised plan” intended to speed up permitting.

“It just makes the permitting process faster,” she said. “It just kind of expedites the process to make sure that everything gets done quickly and efficiently. Eliminates some of the red tape.”

Projects discussed Monday involved routine public works maintenance, though Ewing noted the city’s largest ongoing effort is construction of a six-bay hangar at the municipal airport.
