ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — The St. Joseph Fire Department has launched a new emergency alerting system aimed at improving response times and easing stress for first responders.
The Westnet alerting system, installed in August at the city’s communications center, went into use this month. The internet-based technology dispatches firefighters with an automated voice as soon as an address is obtained, while operators remain on the line with callers to gather more details.
The system also includes features designed to lower responder stress, such as overnight alerts limited to on-duty personnel, lighting that automatically turns on to aid dispatch speed and calm voicing for alerts.
City officials said the $400,000 system was funded through the American Rescue Plan Act.
