Update September 17, 2026 at 5:30 p.m.
Interstate 29 remains closed between Oregon and Mound City following a crash that took place around 2 a.m. Thursday involving an overturned semi hauling sulfuric acid "suspended" with nitroglycerin.
A post on the Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop H X/Twitter account says the crash resulted in the evacuation of about 30 residences by the Mound City rural fire department. Affected residents were allowed to return home.
The preliminary investigation of the crash indicated the southbound semi went off the road, jackknifed, and overturned, coming to rest on its wheels. The trailer overturned onto its driver's side.
That was followed by a secondary crash where a southbound passenger vehicle struck the trailer.
The driver and a passenger in the semi were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the passenger vehicle was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. No names were released.
I-29 will remain closed while hazmat crews and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources deal with the hazardous materials.
