A summary of the August regular meeting of the Maryville school board included approving the budget and the tax levy for the new school year.
The tax levy increased almost 33 cents from last year to just over $5.30.
The district's 107 page budget document noted voters passing "Proposition Spoofhounds" last spring. The revenue was incorporated into the district’s budgeted salary and benefits. After passage, the board approved a six percent pay increase. The base salary for teachers rose $1,968 to $42,718.
The document also said "The budget is in the red $1,657,735 as we continue to upgrade district facilities and spend the remaining Proposition JUMP proceeds. The District continues to benefit from additional revenue generated from the wind farm project that is in the south area of District boundaries. The District continues to carry an adequate balance and operates on a cash basis."
Superintendent Philip Pohren reported "Gym improvements are completed - or nearing the finish line - and we are excited about the progress! A huge thanks to Coach Webb for coordinating the many contractors and details that made these high school and middle school renovations possible. Floor work at all three sites is complete. The middle school now features new bleacher seats and upgraded scoreboards. At MHS, updates include fresh paint, new bleachers (scheduled to arrive 8/24), a new videoboard, and a new scorer’s table."
Assistant superintendent Jeremy Ingraham reported several technology updates that included the district's new security service helped identify and stop several recent hacking attempts. All office PC's have been replaced. And the district's fiber project is nearly complete with an expansion from the technical school to the multipurpose building and the press box.
Personnel actions at the August 19th meeting included the resignation of Maryville High School head baseball coach Hans Plackemeier.
The Maryville school board also held a special meeting August 24th, where approval was given for to a new pay schedule for extracurricular activities and a sports cooperative agreement between Maryville Middle School and St. Gregory Middle School.
