Northwest Missouri State resident assistants prepare for the new school year

Some Northwest students spent the last two weeks of their summer learning how to make the residence halls a better place as resident assistant (RA) training ended this week.

The RA training program starts the last two weeks of the summer and concludes before freshman move-in day on Thursday (August 20th).

The training starts off with community building exercises where people can meet the other RAs in their building and work alongside their other RA's to bond as a team.

Resident assistants then go through informational sessions where they learn the fundamentals of keeping residents safe and connected.

Resident Director Keatley Cotter says that despite the heavy load of information, resident assistants still get to form connections with one another.

RA's also partake in a scavenger hunt where participants have to locate different clues to lead to important places that an RA will use in their position.

The training ends with a session called Behind Closed Doors, where students will be tasked with using all their prior knowledge to solve problems an RA may face.

Cotter says that despite the challenges of being an RA, she feels proud of the students willing to face them.

The course ended as new residents move in Thursday on freshman move in day.
