More than 30 people attended Monday night's (July 27) Nodaway County water district #1 board meeting.
In anticipation of the crowd, the meeting was moved to the conference room at the Maryville Holiday Inn Express, where it was standing room only.
The board did not take up an agenda item titled "Authority to seek proposal from City of Maryville for use of reclaimed water".
Board members repeatedly told data center opponents that they are obligated to sell water to the data center owner if the center provides the infrastructure to receive the water.
The board's attorney, Nick Robb, added "as long as they're here (the data center) and they want to buy water, as a public utility we have to sell them water if we can get it to them. And if they're paying all the cost to get the water to 'em, how can we say no?" Robb also said "The district is not going to be spending any of your tax money to construct what is necessary to feed the data center."
Board vice president Dustin Strueby said "if they come (the data center) and say they want 100,000 gallons from us and we sign a contract for that amount, and then they want more, they're not getting it."
Board members also told opponents to contact their federal and state lawmakers.
