As Fourth of July celebrations approach, the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety is urging motorists to plan ahead and make safe choices before hitting the road.
State safety officials said impaired driving continues to be a major concern. So far in 2025, 117 people have been killed and 662 seriously injured in crashes involving at least one impaired driver.
Officials also warned drivers to avoid distractions, including fireworks, cellphones and other activities that take attention away from the road. Distracted driving contributed to 97 traffic deaths in Missouri last year.
The coalition recommends choosing a sober driver before celebrations begin, arranging a safe ride home if alcohol will be involved, putting phones away while driving, and setting navigation and music before starting a trip.
The reminder comes as holiday travel increases across Missouri and law enforcement agencies prepare for heavier traffic during the Independence Day weekend.
