The Missouri Department of Conservation is asking residents to help monitor the state's wild turkey population by participating in its annual Wild Turkey Brood Survey this summer.
The survey, conducted each year since 1959, collects reports of wild turkey sightings during June, July and August to measure the success of the year's hatch.
According to MDC Turkey Biologist Nick Oakley, data collected through the survey helps biologists assess hatch quality and forecast future turkey population trends. A key measurement is the poult-to-hen ratio, which indicates how many young turkeys survive to join the population.
Anyone can submit turkey sightings during the survey period. Individuals who register as brood survey cooperators receive reminder emails before the survey begins and a summary report after it concludes. Participants may also request a copy of their submitted observations.
More information about becoming a survey cooperator is available through the Missouri Department of Conservation.
