Proposition Spoofhound aims to boost Maryville school funding through tax change

Bill Hooper

As the April election approaches, Maryville residents are expected to hear more about Proposition Spoofhound, a measure aimed at increasing funding for the Maryville R-II School District.

If approved, the proposition would provide a full waiver to the existing Proposition C sales tax and include a 31-cent increase. District officials say the additional revenue would be used to support staff salaries and benefits, operating costs and student programming.

Superintendent Philip Pohren said the measure is key to helping the district remain competitive with surrounding school systems of similar size, particularly when it comes to employee pay.

“It will just be an opportunity for us to either capture some new monies or to dig a little deeper to figure out where we can continue to support our salary schedules for all teachers, custodial [staff] and others,” Pohren said.

Pohren added that if the proposition is approved by voters, the district will clearly outline how the additional funds will be allocated.
