Halloween has brought more than costumes and candy to Northwest Missouri State University over the years — it’s been a stage for campus milestones and memorable moments.

KXCV’s Nicholas Givens takes a look back at some of the university’s Halloween history.

In 1947, a papier-mâché Bearcat made its public debut during homecoming festivities, marking one of the earliest appearances of the school’s mascot in physical form.

By 1955, the celebration took a musical turn when Northwest music faculty member Earl Moss composed the Golden Anniversary March to commemorate the college’s 50th anniversary. The piece was performed by the U.S. Navy Band in the Administration Building auditorium, with Moss conducting.

In 1971, the Percival Duluth Memorial Collection opened in the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building gallery. The collection featured 19th- and early 20th-century paintings along with 18th- and 19th-century furniture, gifted to the university by the estate of Olive DeLuce. Art faculty member Robert Unk served as curator.

More recently, in 2012, MTV stunt performer Steve-O brought his comedy and stand-up act to the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts, giving students a Halloween to remember.

From mascots to music to modern entertainment, Halloween continues to be a time of creativity and celebration at Northwest Missouri State.
