Second Harvest Food Bank serves over 500 area residents at Maryville event

At a recent Mobile Food Pantry drop in Maryville, the second Harvest Food Bank served over 500 people in need.

Mobile Food Pantry events are run by the Second Harvest Food Bank in St. Joseph. They're a way to distribute food to communities across the region. The Maryville Fresh Mobile Pantry was at the Methodist Church on Sep. 10 and served around 533 people across 210 households. Mackenzie Bally, the marketing manager at Second Harvest, said that the Food Drive brings fresh produce to nearby communities.

"We found that they are pretty beneficial. With the rising cost of food something that is hard to get is fresh food and produce. Healthy foods often cost more than unhealthy foods, so we like to provide those [healthier options], when we can."

At each event, a large truck brings 8 to 10 pallets of produce, meats, and anything else the pantry has available. Food is distributed in a drive through style for anyone who shows up, while supplies last. Volunteers load cars as the roll through. Cindy Newbury, a member of the First United Methodist Church, said that volunteers are welcome from around the community.

"Anyone can come and help. It's a community event not just a Methodist Church Event,” she said.

Second Harvest organizes food drives at two places within 18 counties every day. To learn more about Second Harvest visit www.shcfb.org
