MoWest is starting the school year with an updated library facility.

The Hearnes Center, one of the original three buildings constructed on the Missouri Western State University campus, continues to serve as the campus library and a central hub for student activity since its opening in 1972. Recently, the university invested $2.5 million into a major renovation of the facility, aiming to modernize and enhance the student experience.

Library Director Sally Gibson says the renovation was guided by a clear vision:
"We wanted to create a space that today’s students would be excited about—where they feel comfortable, inspired to learn, and able to collaborate. We wanted to foster a community of learning and a sense of shared experience."

Among the upgrades are expanded student study areas, including a new fireplace lounge and individual study rooms. The renovation also introduced a model classroom specifically designed for education majors and created direct access to Academic Support services.

One of the most anticipated features is a new 24-hour space, giving students around-the-clock access to study areas.

Assistant Director of Marketing Kent Heier highlighted the early success of the revamped facility:

"In the first week of classes alone, we saw more than a thousand students visit and use the library," he reports. "That’s a great number to kick off the semester, and we’re excited to see how it grows."
