The St. Joseph Museums are hosting Free Museum Day on Saturday, September 6th. The numerous museums across the city collaborate on the annual event, which provides an opportunity for visitors and locals to explore St. Joseph's unique culture, and history. Director of St. Joseph Museums Sarah Wilson spoke with KXCV about their mission.
Wilson says, "Our museums are so important to St. Joseph. We are preserving our community's history and art and sharing that with both our local community as well as to our visitors that come from out of town. So it just really helps us remember the important parts of our history that we don't want to forget and highlight things that we're proud of, and expand the educational role for everyone."
Although it's now a tradition in St. Joseph, Free Museum Day used to be a national event, says Wilson.
"Originally I started at Smithsonian Free Museum days where museums across the country would open up for free for their local communities and visitors. A few years ago after COVID, Smithsonian kind of stopped hosting Free Museum Day. But here in St. Joseph, we really liked it and so we wanted to continue doing free museum.", Wilson says.
Once again the event is Saturday, September 6th from 10AM until 5PM.
Participating museums include the Albrecht-Kemper Museum, the Andrew County Museum, the Black Archives, the Doll Museum, the Glore Psychiatric Museum, The Pony Express National Museum, and many others!
