US Senator Joni Ernst, who represents Iowans in Washington DC, is bowing out of national politics. She announced Tuesday she would not seek re-election for her senate post after months of speculation. Any shifts in congress are being closely watched ahead of the 2026 midterms as democrats are eager to retake control and block President Trump's agenda.

Senator Chuck Grassley, who represents southwest Iowa, said it had been an honor to serve alongside Ernst.

"As the Senate's first female combat veteran and first woman elected to Congress, she broke barriers at every turn. I will miss serving with Joni, but know she will enjoy having more time to cherish her favorite role as a mother and grandmother.", says Grassley.

Ernst has taken criticism from both the right and the left in recent months. In a video statement, she did not give a reason for her decision to step down, only adding she would continue to serve her country however possible. There will be a contested primary to fill her seat on both the democratic and republican side.
