Major invasive carp removal on Platte River

MDC logo

The Missouri Department of Conservation is launching a major invasive carp removal operation on the Platte River in Platte County, just north of Farley. The Schimmel City Access will be closed Sept. 8–11 and Sept. 22–25 for the project, which is in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Crews will target silver, bighead, grass, and black carp—non-native species that outcompete native fish for food and habitat. Known for rapid reproduction and aggressive feeding, these carp pose a serious threat to native species like catfish and buffalo. Silver carp, which leap from the water when startled, can also injure boaters.

Removed fish will be processed into products such as animal feed protein and fish bait. Native fish captured during the process will be measured and released for research. Biologists will monitor changes in fish populations following the removal.

While other river access points remain open, boaters are urged to avoid the area during the operation.
