City of St. Joseph starts converting a second parking garage to surface parking

Image posted 8/3/2026 on the City of St. Joseph MO-Government Facebook page.

The city of St. Joseph has closed a second downtown parking garage to convert to a surface lot.

According to the city's Facebook page, the garage at Sixth and Jules, like the former garage at Fourth and Felix next to the St. Joseph Civic Arena, is being removed due to long term structural concerns.

Instead of spending $12 million dollars to repair the garages, about $833,000 is being spent to remove the upper sections.

This is one of the last projects to be paid with federal money received during the pandemic...which has to be spent before the end of this year.

While the conversion is underway, two-hour parking limits are being suspended in nearby areas.

Bill Oliver has returned to his alma mater as News Director for KXCV/KRNW after leading award winning news operations as part of a career that has also included sports, operations, management, and sales at public and commercial radio stations in Texas, Kansas, and Nebraska.

A 1981 Northwest Missouri State University graduate, Oliver was deeply involved with KXCV and KDLX as a student, hosting music and news programs, calling sports broadcasts, and helping keep the station on the air after the 1979 Administration Building fire.

Oliver says his return is motivated by a desire to be closer to family and to give back to the university and the mentors who helped shape his broadcasting career.
