Colleges are back in session in our region

Universities in the region are welcoming students for the fall semester this week.

Missouri Western State University in St Joseph, now branding itself as 'MoWest,' welcomed more than 800 new students to campus, a combination of transfers and freshmen enrollments. The new students are coming from 24 different states, but MoWest reported an uptick in students from the greater St. Joseph region, which is fitting with the university's current mission, says President Elizabeth Kennedy.

" We are a regional public university, and I think it's important to realize, well, why do we have regional publics? Because they serve the region. Typically, you can get a quality education for a much lower price and for many people you will go to a school that's close to you because that's your life circumstances. And our mission at MoWest is to make sure that we're providing those in demand degree programs that will produce career opportunities for our graduates.", says Dr. Kennedy.

Enrollment data will not become official for a few more weeks.

Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville has not released details on its enrollment yet, but is projecting a headcount of around 8,500 students this fall. Peru State College in Nebraska welcomed students back in mid-August, but has not released enrollment data yet. Many institutions of higher education are looking to increase or stabilize enrollments as the higher ed market is becoming more competitive.
