Northwest Missouri State took control early and kept No. 15 Fort Hays State at bay Saturday on the way to a 69-55 win.

The Bearcats (16-5, 10-5 MIAA) used a 13-0 run in the first quarter to jump on top of the Tigers. Fort Hays was limited to just 22 points by halftime.

The Tigers outscored the Bearcats 12-2 over the final six minutes of the third quarter to climb back within eight points. Needing a surge to start the fourth, Laini Joseph hit a layup and a three-pointer, Molly Hartnett knocked down a jumper, and Jayna Green sank two free throws to extend the lead back to 15 points.

For the game, Northwest made 17 of 18 free throw attempts.

Joseph put up career-highs with 16 points and seven rebounds.

Lindsey Kelderman knocked down three three-pointers on the way to 15 points, and Emma Atwood reached double figures with 11 points for the first time since December 19.

The win over Fort Hays is the first for Northwest since 2017, and it is the first win at home over a ranked team since 2017.

The Bearcats go on the road Wednesday to face Emporia State. Game time is 5:30pm. Pregame on KXCV 90.5 and KRNW 88.9 begins at 5pm.
