Northwest Missouri State, entering Saturday's matchup as the preseason No. 1 ranked team by the NABC, answered the bell in a big way with a 78-62 win over No. 5 West Texas A&M in the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic.

The Bearcats (1-0) were tied 36-36 at halftime, but a 10-0 run early in the second half gave them some breathing room. Overall, Northwest shot 74-percent from the field in the final 20 minutes to pull away.

Mitch Mascari scored a career-high 18 points to lead the Bearcats. Luke Waters added 17 points.

Diego Bernard finished with five points, 14 rebounds and four assists.

Northwest faces Flagler in the final game of the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic Sunday at 7pm.
