Northwest 72, Washburn 70

Northwest Missouri State built a big lead early and hung on late to knock off Washburn 72-70 Thursday evening.

It is the first victory for the Bearcats (8-20, 4-15 MIAA) over Washburn in Topeka since 1985. 

Northwest scored the first 13 points of the game, and jumped out to a 27-10 lead in the second quarter.

The Ichabods fought back to take a two-point lead in the third quarter, and stayed close with the Bearcats the rest of the way.

Washburn's Taylor Blue gave the 'Bods a 68-67 lead with 1:03 remaining in the game.

Mallory McConkey answered on the next possession with a layup to put Northwest back in front. She sank a pair of free throws with 21 seconds left to give the 'Cats a three-point advantage.

Washburn's attempt to tie the game fell short, McConkey grabbed the rebound and secured the win.

McConkey posted a a career-high 23 points, and hit 7-8 free throws.

Kendey Eaton added 20 points. Kylie Coleman finished with 12, and Erika Schlosser had 11.
