Northwest Missouri State put together one of its best performances of the season on Senior Day as it knocked off Missouri Southern 79-73 Saturday afternoon.

A tight basketball game throughout, the Bearcats (4-21, 3-14 MIAA) took the lead from the Lions with 6:15 remaining in the third quarter, and never let them back in front the rest of the way.

Tanya Meyer delivered 19 points and 9 rebounds in her final game at Bearcat Arena, and fellow senior Mele Tupouata gave Northwest a big spark late in the 2nd quarter with four straight points just before halftime. But it was the clutch effort from the freshman class that lifted the 'Cats to victory.

Ahead by three early in the fourth quarter, Jaelyn Haggard knocked down a three-pointer while getting fouled to double the Northwest lead. Haggard sank the following free throw to complete the four-point play, and extend it to a seven-point advantage over Southern.

The Lions were back within three of the Bearcats a couple minutes later when Mallory McConkey hit a lay-up and a free throw on an and-one opportunity, and Haggard knocked down another three-pointer to put Northwest up by nine.

Haggard and Kylie Coleman combine to go 4-4 at the free throw line in the final 30 seconds of the game to seal the six-point victory.

In all, Northwest freshmen scored 16 of 26 points in the fourth quarter.

Haggard led the 'Cats with 21 points and five assists.

Junior Mallory McAndrews finished with 14 points in the win.

Northwest hits the road Thursday to meet Lindenwood. Tip off from St. Charles is set for 5:30pm. Pregame on KXCV-KRNW will begin at 5:10pm.
