Work around the Northwest Missouri State University campus is happening in full force, from renovations at Martindale Hall to addressing storm water issues throughout the grounds.
The ongoing construction led to the relocation of the Mark Rosewell Tennis Center.
Northwest's intercollegiate tennis courts are being moved from their current home next to the Foster Fitness Center to west of Hughes Fieldhouse next to the Bearcat Soccer Pitch.
A trench will cut through the current tennis courts later this summer, and Northwest athletic director, Dr. Andy Peterson said it's "unrealistic" to repair the courts in a way that would return them to collegiate quality and dimensions.
"We're kind of landlocked with the rec center on the south and Brown Hall on the north. We really can't fit courts back in there the correct way once we cut across them, so that forced us to move our intercollegiate courts out by Hughes."
The concrete for the new tennis courts was completed Monday. Other changes for athletic facilities include the throws cage for track and field shifting, so the shotput, discus, hammer throw and javelin are all now using the same space.
They are changes to campus that have been in the works for years.
"Being able to move all of this around hasn't just been willy nilly – it's a part of a framework and in a structure that everybody agreed to a long time ago," Dr. Peterson said during an interview on the Bearcat Rewind podcast. "We're just able to continue on that plan. Obviously, there are changes and nuances here and there, but for the most part we're moving in the right direction."
The anticipated completion date for the new tennis courts is early August.
