St. Joseph opens a new cell at the landfill

The St Joseph landfill has seen an unexpected, and rapid, increase in use over the last ten years. Even as the city's population has declined, the rate of trash recieved there has doubled.

Last week the city opened a new cell at the landfill after an accelerated construction process. At a meeting of the City Council on Monday, City Manager Mike Shumacher said opening the new landfill section was a no easy feat.

"The amount of dirt that was moved as part of the project -- it's hard to wrap your mind around that. There are three full-sized football fields just at the base of Cell 8 so they moved a massive amount of dirt, in interesting weather."

Earlier this year it became clear the city needed to increase the speed of construction on the new bay, as existing landfill space was running out. It brought in a private contractor to speed up the process and began using the new cell last week. The city hopes it will last 3 to five years, and has already begun work on the next landfill cell.
