It is looking increasingly likely that Republican Lawmakers in Missouri will meet this September to redistrict congressional maps in Kansas City, as part of a national "gerrymandering" effort.

At the urging of President Donald Trump, multiple state legislatures across the country are considering redrawing congressional maps in order to advantage Republicans in 2026 US house races. In response, liberal states such as California and New York have said they will respond with their own partisan redistricting efforts.

The wave could hit Missouri. District 5, located in Kansas City, could be broken up to make re-election more difficult for Democratic Rep Emanuel Cleaver. The Missouri State Legislature has already had a divisive year, blocking a voter-approved abortion access measure and meeting for a special session to create a stadium incentive package.

Reporting from St Louis Public Radio and other state newsrooms has suggested conservative state lawmakers have an increasing appetite for a redistricting effort, which would take place in Jefferson City next month.
