Policy guidelines for the use of AI in classrooms are changing

Over half of states have issued recommendations regarding the use of artificial intelligence in K-12 schools. That now includes Missouri. While the Trump Administration has made efforts to loosen federal and state restrictions on AI, both teachers and students can struggle to keep up with the new, and still evolving technology. CEO and co-founder of advocacy group AI for Education Amanda Bickerstaff says states are regulating the technology in order to "provide some safety guidelines around responsible use and to create opportunities for people to know what's appropriate".For the first time, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has released policy guidelines regarding the use of AI in the classroom. These guidelines will help districts write policies for their schools. Under recently revised Missouri law, school boards now have local control over rules and regulations surrounding AI.The guide lists common pros and cons of AI use in education with advice on how to engage with both ends of that spectrum. It also outlines common challenges of AI use, addressing each concern individually and following up with recommended responses. The full guide can be found on the Department's website: dese.mo.gov
