NWMSU hopes to expand the recruitment and visitors center

Northwest Missouri State University is purchasing a building near the entry of its campus to develop a new student recruitment and family welcome center.

The Board of Regents approved the 500,000 dollar purchase at its meeting last week. The purchase is not finalized, as the University remains in negotations, but it's hoping to reach a final contract shortly.

The planned purchase is for the Wesley Property, a small brick building just east of the college on fourth street. At some point, Northwest hopes to redevelop the building and the neighboring Mabel Cook House into an expanded college recruitment and visitors center.

Facing a tight budget for the year ahead, Northwest President Lance Tatum said the purchase was justified as it advances the University's focus on sustaining and growing enrollment numbers. Student recruitment is becoming more competitive in today's higher education market, he said.

President Tatum says,  "It is something that requires a much more personalized and technology approach to make sure students feel valued and identified when they come on campus. This property is going to give us some flexibility in the conversation of what that future experience could look like for prospective students."

In approving the purchase, regents pulled money from a set aside fund for an existing campus construction project.
