Construction on South Depot in Maryville

Reduce, reuse, recycle! Not a bad idea, especially when you can save money doing it.

The City of Maryville is working to pave South Depot Street on the City's east side. And City Public Works Director Matt Smith says they already have a possible stockpile of concrete for the project.

" The city of Maryville has accumulated a sizable stockpile of concrete rubble at the airport. This concrete rubble has been identified as a possible source for aggregate to complete the 600 foot realignment of South Depot Street.", says Smith.

That's Smith at a meeting of the City Council earlier this week. The rubble material is leftover from old town projects. A contractor from Clarinda Iowa will grind it down for reuse on Depot Street. Even with the price of the contracter, reusing the old material will save the city money. Smith says City upkeep projects are creating more concrete waste all the time.

"and if this goes well, as these stockpiles grow I imagine we can grind that material for different projects.", says Smith.

The Depot Street Realignment project will create a paved roadway on South Depot all the way from first street to 268th Street. The roadway currently turns to rubble past the Humane Society.
