More than 1,000 Vietnam Era military veterans were honored in a special ceremony on Monday in St. Joseph.

The City of St. Joseph, the AUSA Henry Leavenworth Chapter, and the St. Joseph Community Alliance sponsored a United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration pinning ceremony at Word of Life Church.

The event acted as a thank you to those who served in any military branch from November 1, 1955, to May 15, 1975, as well as their families.

Around 115 St. Joseph area residents were present at the ceremony, including Wilson D. Fletcher, who was the 1,000th person recognized at the event.

Those who attended Monday's ceremony were gifted a commemorative Vietnam Veteran lapel pin, a special coin, and a certificate. Another ceremony was held Monday afternoon at the Missouri Veterans Home in Cameron. Those who were recognized also received pins, coins, and certificates.

The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration program was signed into law by former President Barack Obama in 2012, creating a 13 year period to honor the country's military veterans of that era and their families.
