The Missouri Veterans Commission, following guidance from the State Legislature, is working on suicide prevention amongst veterans in the state.
It released a nine-page report on the subject, to outline a 'planning framework...to help curb veteran suicides in Missouri.' The plan details a strategy to reduce the total number of veteran suicides in the coming years.
The report found a major challenge is the stigma surrounding mental health and reaching out for help. Veterans face signifcantly higher rates of mental health challenges, and suicide, than non-veterans.
State Representative Dave Griffith expresse dhis hope that the report will further the work of prevention in Missouri. If we 'understand the factors involved,' he said, 'we can work to enact change.'
If you or someone you know is facing suicidal thoughts, support is available 24 hours by calling the prevention hotline: 988.
