Nodaway County Courthouse updates

Summer construction season is hitting not only roads, but city buildings across the region. The Gentry County Courthouse in Albany recieved a facelift this spring, and as contractors finish on that building the same team will move on to the Nodaway County Courthouse in Maryville.

The two buildings actually share a bit of history. Both were designed by the St Joseph based architecture firm Eckel And Mann, and were completed in the 1880s. The Nodaway Courthouse is about two years older. They are stylistically similar as well, featuring prominant towers and intricate stone decoration.

That decoration deteriotes over time. The restoration will address a series of issues on the buildings exterior, says Nodaway County Commissioner Scott Walk.

Walk says, "[There's] sandstone deteriotation and places where the brickwork has gotten into disrepair. This will allow us to fix that up."

The county is using pandemic relief money from the American Rescue Plan Act to fund the work. The county must spend its ARPA money before the end of 2026 -- or lose it. The commissioners admit, maintaining old buildings can lead to expense and burden. But Walk says the commission will -- begrudgingly -- do the work.

"The Courthouse is a very prominent, historic building here in Nodaway County, so we're going to try to keep it up.", says Walk.

Work on the courthouse is scheduled to begin next week, and take roughly four weeks to complete, weather permitting. A wet spring slowed the progress in Gentry County.
