CONFLUENCE/CITY OF MARYVILLE
A much awaited update is coming to Maryville's downtown after the city council voted to approve funds at this week's meeting.
After receiving over 700 thousand dollars in grant funding from the state in 2023, the city has been working on plans to develop an alley way between North Main Street and Buchanon into a pedestrian walkway.
The current design includes a pavilion, gardens, nightime lighting, picnic areas, and a small playground.
The City conducted a search for contractors earlier this year. Despite mutiple attempts, they recieved only one bid for the project. City Manager Ryan Heiland says he is unsure why they saw limited interest.
"We reached out to a lot of different contractors at the pre-bid conference. There were five or six contractors there. I think it was just one of those projects that was little more complex than they wanted to take on. But it's hard to say [why interest was limited]."
The contracter who submitted, Mega KC, estimated the cost of the original designs would be close to 2 million dollars. The city reworked some elements to cut that back to about 1.4 million.
Speaking at this week's council meeting, Heiland says they had to simplify the pavilion design, but are not getting rid of it completely.
"We are going to add another pavilion back. The one as designed was very expensive. It was really designed to hide the electrical equipment. We created a different system to hide the equipment for this."
The city hopes to begin initial construction this fall, with a completion by June of 2026.
